Fitch's Bridge, Delhi

Fitch's Bridge and Delaware River, Delhi, Delaware Co., NY. Monochrome picture postcard. (Delhi, NY: P. B. Merrill) A vertical line of type dividing the back of the card reads, "The finest American made view post cards--The Albertype Co., Brooklyn, N.Y."

This covered bridge over the west branch of the Delaware River was probably named for Dr. Thomas Fitch (1774-1849), No. 917, and his younger brother, Dr. Cornelius Root Fitch (1783-1846), No. 921. Thomas bought a farm at the bridge on the river in 1803. When he left Delhi for Philadelphia in 1806, he sold the farm to Cornelius, who continued to practise medicine in Delhi for 33 years. The bridge itself was originally at Kingston Street in Delhi, a few miles downstream. When that bridge was washed out by a flood, a new bridge was constructed in 1885 at Fitch's crossing, East Delhi.
